A 60-metre-long suspension bridge high over the Elk Falls Provincial Park north of Campbell River has been under construction for the past eight month and is now ready for the first daring people to walk over it. With a new suspension bridge, Campbell River is aiming to give visitors a thrill.
The pedestrian bridge in Elk Falls is designed with a sag, said Lorrie Bewza, who was heading up the project for the Rotary Club of Campbell River. Sagging helps provide the fun and the fear factor. Whenever people are on it, it will be a bit of a movement. The bridge is 60-65 metres above the water, providing a view of the tumbling 25metres of Elk Falls. the visit is free to see the amazing canyon.
Elk Falls bridge will join new and planned pedestrian suspension bridges in Squamish and Kelowna, designed to attract visitors and boost tourism. They are building on the popularity of the famous 137metre long Capilano bridge in North Vancouver, which hange 70metres above the water. Between 35,000 and 70.000 people will walk over the bridge annually, injecting $2.5 -5 million into the local economy. Today's suspension bridge are built using steel cables. The Elk Falls bridge will be anchored into bedrock. Extra side cables are installed to stabilize the sway. Access to the suspension bridge will be via a new Hydro-built, 80-stall parking lot off Hwy 28 . The new parking area is linked to a trail and pedestrian crossing over to Hydro pipelines and there is a new interpretive centre about the generating station. Dave Petryk, president and CEO of Touridm Vancouver Island praised the project. " When you add something like a suspension bridge to a trail system, I think it gives you a really cool asset that's a little unique and different and that's the kind of thing we are looking for.Coming soon will be guided active family holidays with Zap Adventures. We explore Elk Falls Provincial Park with an interpretive hike. Enjoy the beautiful trail system and the new suspension bridge.
